My Approach

The deadlines are mine. The reflection is yours.

College admissions can feel like a logistical avalanche. My job is to take that weight off your family so the student can do the meaningful work: discovering who they are, what they care about, and where they belong.

A customized roadmap

Every student gets a personalized timeline mapped to their goals, schools, and modalities — not a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Proactive milestone coaching

I track progress against the roadmap and nudge students forward before things become urgent. Parents are kept in the loop with regular, transparent updates.

The whole family in the loop

Clear communication about what's happening, what's next, and how the student is growing — without overstepping student ownership.

Authenticity over polish

I am not a ghostwriter. The student's voice, ideas, and ownership are non-negotiable — that's what colleges actually want to hear.

Services

A complete partnership — or just the parts you need.

Every family's situation is different. Engagements are scoped to the student's grade, goals, and the support that will actually move the needle.

Global Reach

Beyond the US: confident guidance for UK, Canadian, and Australian universities.

Most US counselors stop at the US border. I don't. Whether your student is considering Oxford or McGill alongside their US list, or is an international student applying to American universities from abroad, I bring the same systematic clarity to every system.

United Kingdom

UCAS strategy, personal statement structure, Oxbridge interview prep, course selection, and the very different cultural expectations of UK admissions.

Canada

OUAC and direct-application processes for McGill, UBC, Toronto, Waterloo, and beyond — including supplementary applications and scholarship strategy.

Australia

Direct applications to Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, and other Group of Eight universities, including pathway and conditional-offer planning.

International → US

Specialized support for students applying to American universities from outside the US — credential evaluation, English proficiency, school-list calibration, and culturally aware essay coaching.

Writing Coaching

The essay should sound like the student — full stop.

I am an encouraging writing coach. Some students need structure: weekly homework, guided exercises, and clear deadlines. Others need a thinking partner: live workshopping, a sounding board, a careful editor. And some need a scribe — someone who can transcribe their ideas faithfully while they brainstorm out loud, so nothing gets lost between thought and page.

I adapt my modality to the student in front of me. What never changes: the words on the application are the student's own.

  • Assigned exercises & homework
  • Live brainstorming & workshopping
  • Scribe sessions for free-form thinking
  • Structural & line-level feedback
  • Voice and authenticity coaching
  • Supplemental essay strategy across schools

About

Hello — I'm Maggie Varland.

I'm a private college counselor based in Richmond, Virginia, working with students and families across the US and internationally. My background is in education strategy, student progress tracking, and the kind of patient, organized advising that turns an overwhelming process into a meaningful one.

What I love most about this work: the moment a student stops asking "what will look good?" and starts asking "what do I actually want?" That's the shift that produces authentic applications — and, more importantly, a student who is ready to thrive wherever they go.

When I'm not working with students, you can find me rowing on the James River, cooking my way through international cuisines, planning the next family hike, or losing myself in a good performance or museum.
